Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE) is relevant to all branches of industry, business and commerce. In Trinidad and Tobago, it is of paramount importance to the upstream, midstream and downstream industries in the oil and gas sector given the high risks to accidents occurring in the workplace. HSE affects all aspects of work and therefore needs to be managed properly.
Efficient HSE management systems should meet legal requirements and the duty to care for and protect workers from occupational hazards, accidents, ill-health and fatalities. Additionally, a robust HSE management system aims to provide a safe work environment for all employees and builds an HSE culture that becomes second nature to management and employees.
The role of the HSE employee covers a range of activities; from being the champion in promoting a positive HSE culture; developing and implementing health and safety policies and procedures; identifying and evaluating HSE hazards and preparing risk assessments; investigating incidents and accidents, implementing effective communication systems for HSE information as well as enforcing and complying with HSE legislative requirements.
Presently, in Trinidad and Tobago the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act 2004 as amended 2006, focuses on promoting the safety, health and welfare of employees at industrial establishments. The responsibility of the employer and by extension the HSE employee shall be to ensure compliance with the requirements of the OSH Act in fulfilling their duty of care towards employees and the public.
Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment is a rewarding career, with highly transferable skills which can be utilized in all sectors of any economy both locally and internationally.
