WHAT IS PLAR?
PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. It is a powerful process that validates and recognises the skills, knowledge and competencies you’ve gained through various learning experiences – informal, nonformal, or formal.
With PLAR, skilled individuals without certification can achieve the Trinidad and Tobago National Vocational Qualification (TTNVQ) or the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), unlocking new career opportunities and gaining the recognition they deserve.

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITION PROCESS
PLAR PROCESS
Application – Stage 1
- Sign up and provide your details to start the PLAR process.
- Complete and submit the application form.
- Provide a computerized birth certificate pin number.
- Provide a valid form of photo ID.
- Provide a passport pin number.
- Provide a valid form of photo ID.
Pre-Screening – Stage 2
- Complete a self-assessment review
Requirements for Pre-Screening:
- Identify your occupational area of interest.
- Complete and submit a self-assessment in the identified area of interest.
Orientation and Registration – Stage 3
- Attend an orientation to learn about the PLAR process and register for the assessment.
Attend an orientation to learn about:
- The PLAR process
- Evidence collection and documentation
- Portfolio development
Complete the Registration process:
- Sign the letter of engagement.
- Make arrangements to pay the assessment fee.
Pre-Assessment – Stage 4
- Prepare your evidence and create a plan for the assessment.
- Complete and review the self-assessment on TVETCC with an expert.
- Review collected portfolio evidence and receive feedback from the expert.
- Develop activities and determine assessment methods according to occupational standards and the candidate’s needs.
- Finalise assessment details and complete the candidate readiness for the assessment form.
Assessment – Stage 5
- Complete the assessment.
Assessment – Stage 5
- Undergo the assessment process.
- Receive feedback from the expert on your competency status.
- Internal Verification is initiated.
Certification – Stage 6
- Results are verified by an external verifier.
- Candidates receive either a certificate or unit awards based on the assessment outcome.
Certification – Stage 6
- Results are verified by an external verifier, and candidates receive certificates or unit awards.
Post-Certification Guidance and Support – Stage 7
- Candidates are advised on further training or career opportunities.
- Ongoing support is provided to help candidates advance their skills and career prospects.
